"Beyond Boundaries: 35 Chicago Artists Connect"
is NOW TOURING!!

The show has already made a few stops and is currently on its way to Saginaw Valley State University. The Larson Gallery at Yakima Valley Community College presentation was a stellar success. Gallery Director Cheryl Hahn created an interactive print "laboratory" right in the gallery, and "lines" were not only painted on the walls and across the floor (connecting the Chicago and Yakima artists), but also clear up and on the celebratory cake at the opening! We were duly impressed. They had a fantastic turnout and lots of press. Stay tuned for images by the participating Washington State artists.

Beyond Boundaries: 35 Artists Connect
October 1 through November 4, 2006.

For the past 11 years, Chicago's artists have looked forward to Chicago Artists Month, the city wide celebration of the visual arts during the month of October. This past year's celebration was themed "Beyond Boundaries".

Boundaries-physical or imagined, global or personal-can constrain our lives if we let them. In "Beyond Boundaries - 35 Chicago Artists Connect", members of the Collaborative and invited guests created 12" x 12" unique works of art using materials of their choice: paper, glass, wood, paint, fabric etc. Each work of art contained a line or visual element that crossed the center, connecting one artist to the next, moving outside the borders of an individual space and into a new boundless one. The modular format of the project allows the exhibition to travel, be reconfigured and find new connections along the way.

A collection of postcards of the original art was created to celebrate this project. This allowed the public to purchase a form of the art while actively participating in the idea of going beyond boundaries, i.e. the "sending off" of the art as mail, disseminating the images all over the world. In this way the theme comes full circle. The postcards have also been displayed, arranged in frames, laminated, and used to build houses of "cards". A boxed collection of cards is available for purchase (see above).

Participating Artists: Hiroshi Ariyama, Stephanie Barenz, Margaret Buchen, Lia Conklin, Laura M. Coyle, Sue Demel, Sam Falbo, Susan Hall, Fletcher Hayes, Carrie Iverson, Catherine Jacobi, Janet Jaffke, Cynthia King, Kathleen King, Jill Kramer, Deborah Maris Lader, Kim Laurel, Thomas Lucas, John McGlinn, Kate McQuillen, Bert Menco, Michael Miller, BettyAnn Mocek, Steve Mueller, Sarah Nishiura, Duffy O'Connor, Dennis B. O'Malley, Mary K. O'Shaughnessy, Heather Page, Tom Robinson, Robert Sabo, Megan Sterling, Kyra Termini, Kim Vanderheiden, Charlie Van Gilder.

This program is part of Chicago Artists Month, which is supported and coordinated by the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs. For more information, please visit www.chicagoartistsmonth.org.

THANKS TO ALL who participated in, curated, publicized, and viewed our beautiful exhibition at the Chicago Cultural Center. Our show, On The Mark: Chicago Printmakers Collaborative 1989-2005 was an enormous success, seen by thousands of people and written up in Chicago Social, Time Out Chicago, and Chicago Artists News, among other publications. It was truly something to be proud of! Special thanks go out to Lanny Silverman and Jill Hurwitz and Cynthia Quick from the Dept. Of Cultural Affairs, and to Carrie Iverson, who did such a spectacular job with the original proposal. I had a great time yakking it up with Tony Fitzpatrick at the Gallery talk on October 6th, and I just finished the eeny weeny etching we worked on together during our presentation. Catch it at the Small Print Show...
